A Honduran man being held at a migrant detention facility in Texas died shortly after being found unresponsive in his room, BuzzFeed News reports.
Yimi Alexis Balderramos-Torres, 30, is the sixth immigrant to die in ICE custody since October. ICE said he was found unresponsive in his room and medical officials were unable to revive him at the facility.
Balderramos-Torres made numerous attempts to enter the U.S. and in May was found to be inadmissible and was returned to Mexico.
Ten days later, he entered the country again and was picked up by local law enforcement, during a routine traffic stop. He was placed in ICE custody June 6 and was transferred June 18 to the Houston Contract Detention Facility, where he died.
ICE said he tried to enter the U.S. in 2013 and was sent back to Honduras.
The report comes on the same day freshman lawmaker Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., described the conditions at the El Paso Border Patrol station where migrants are being held as "horrifying" and "inhumane."
"This has been horrifying so far. It is hard to understate the enormity of the problem," wrote the Democrat from New York. "We're talking systemic cruelty w/ a dehumanizing culture that treats them like animals."
