Democrats on the House Intelligence Committee are more than doubling the size of their investigative staff as the panel gets set to reopen its probe into Russia and the 2016 presidential election, CBS News is reporting.
The Democrats will increase the size of the staff from 11 to 24. The latest staff hires include an expert in corruption and illicit finance and a former prosecutor. Roughly seven of the Democrats’ new staffers will probe alleged connections between President Donald Trump, his campaign associates, and Russia officials. Other staffers will be able to assist in as needed.
"There's a lot of work yet to be done on Russia," a senior committee official told CBS News. "What we're doing is we are creating a purpose-built team that will take the point on that."
Republicans are expected to reduce their staff size.
Meanwhile Democrats on the committee plan to subpoena Donald Trump Jr. as part of their investigation. Rep. Jackie Speier, D-Calif. said the president’s son likely would be subpoenaed first.
