The hard-right House Freedom Caucus is reportedly preparing to push a reform plan for the influential Steering Committee that'll reduce the power of the GOP leadership team on the panel.

The plan would include booting the chairmen of the six most-powerful committees off the speaker-controlled panel to spread out the power, The Hill reports.

According to The Hill, the speaker of the House has five votes on the Steering Committee and the majority leader has two; the Freedom Caucus wants reforms to keep the representatives in six top leadership spots on the committee, but give those people the same voting power as the rest of the Steering Committee's members.

The reforms would also remove the committee chairs, and instead provide for the selection of  20 additional members for the committee representing different geographical regions.

Overall, the plan would reduce the speaker's power on the committee and involve more members and younger congressmen in the committee's deliberations about assignments, The Hill notes.

One unnamed Republican lawmaker slammed the plan as a "bad idea," and is backing a compromise to preserve existing members, while adding more regional representatives.

"I believe we should open up and expand the number without kicking anyone off," the lawmaker tells The Hill, adding many conservatives "are willing to go with an approach that doesn't pull chairmen off and instead opens it up by adding folks."

Ryan has already said he'll try to restructure the committee before Thanksgiving, according to Politico.
