The Republican Party is launching their own fundraising website focused on small donors, similar to the Democrats’ ActBlue, named WinRed by President Donald Trump.
“I am pleased to announce the launch of http://tmagac.winred.com,” Trump tweeted on Monday. “This new platform will allow my campaign and other Republicans to compete with the Democrats money machine. This has been a priority of mine and I’m pleased to share that it is up and running!”
ActBlue already has raised more than $174 million this year, putting Democrats far ahead of the GOP in terms of small-money contributions. WinRed is meant to streamline the GOP’s fundraising system by centralizing online donations in one place.
“This is the first time I’ve ever seen either political party come together to do something genuinely good for campaigns instead of consultants,” Josh Holmes, one of the top aides to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., who took part in the negotiations, told Politico. “It’s unquestionably the most significant realignment of political infrastructure in my career.”
Politico reports that the system was originally going to be called “Patriot Pass,” but this was dropped due to an objection from New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft, a friend of Trump’s who complained that the name was too similar to his team’s. Trump reportedly then suggested both “ActRed” and WinRed as possible alternatives.
“ActBlue has had 15 years to grow,” WinRed president Gerrit Lansing told Politico, “and today’s launch is the first step in a long journey to unify the party behind a central platform.”
