Georgia might go down as a must-win state in this presidential election cycle, and Vice President Kamala Harris' campaign is calling the key battleground state in play after she replaced President Joe Biden at the top of the ticket.
"We really think that we have a chance to win Georgia," Mitch Landrieu, national co-chair for the Harris-Walz campaign, told MSNBC's "The Weekend," about being "100%" in on competing for Georgia's 16 Electoral College votes.
"They're going to compete there in a very hard way. And we're going to make Donald Trump defend every ounce of ground in America."
The 270 to Win election analysis website calls Georgia a "toss up" to date.
Biden won the Georgia vote in 2020, becoming only the second Democrat to win the historically red state since 1980. Former President Bill Clinton won Georgia in 1992.
The switch from Biden to Harris has given the Democrat presidential campaign a boost, according to Landrieu.
"Focused on Georgia, they got new energy when the vice president took over," he told MSNBC.
"Sen. [Raphael] Warnock, as you know, gave an incredible speech at the convention. And Sen. [Jon] Ossoff is there, as well as [Rep.] Lucy McBath and a bunch of other folks."
While Harris still is the popular vote favorite in polling average by The Hill and Decision Desk HQ, Trump leads Georgia by 2.7 percentage points over Harris (49.2%-46.5%) in the average of 15 recent polls.
Other key battleground states in the race for the 270 Electoral College votes needed to secure the White House, according to the polling averages:

- Nevada: Trump leads by 1 point (47.3%-46.3%).
