George Conway, the husband of White House adviser Kellyanne Conway, is supporting William Barr in the flap over the attorney general booking the Trump International Hotel for a $30,000 holiday party.
Barr last month booked a 200-person private party at Trump's hotel in Washington, D.C. The Washington Post obtained a copy of a contract signed by Barr for a "family Holiday Party" at the hotel for Dec. 8.
Barr, who holds the party annually, is reportedly paying for the venue himself. It was booked at Trump's hotel after several other hotels were unavailable, a Justice Department official said.
Conway, a frequent critic of President Donald Trump, took to Twitter to make his comments on Tuesday.
He wrote: "Frankly, this is a silly story. Barr is paying for the party out of his own pocket. The hotel is next door to DOJ. The notion that the small profit from this would improve his standing with Trump, especially given how Barr misled the public about the Mueller report, is absurd."
But veteran political analyst Norman Ornstein of the American Enterprise Institute saw it differently.
Ornstein wrote on Twitter: "I respectfully disagree, George. It is a conflict. Barr giving a middle finger to any notion of independence. Imagine if Obama's AG had given a $30,000 donation to the Clinton Foundation while there were qs about Hillary. Not even $ in their pockets. Defcon 1, appropriately so."
