Evan Bayh: Insurance-Cost Increases Next Obamcare Hurdle

By    |   Sunday, 03 November 2013 12:46 PM EST

Former Indiana Democratic Sen. Evan Bayh said the Affordable Care Act could face even more scrutiny if Americans see the cost of their health insurance premiums increase.

"The rollout was a real calamity," Bayh said on "Fox News Sunday." "I think that the next shoe waiting to drop is cost increases. If this causes the price to go up because the minimum benefit package is very rich or because of other factors, that, politically, is going to be a real problem."

When asked about his party's success in the national election last year, Bayh, who also served as governor of Indiana, said the gubernatorial races in New Jersey and Virginia on Tuesday might serve as bellwethers.

"The basic question they [Republicans] need to ask themselves is what are they all about," he said. "Are they here to win elections and to govern, or are they here to send a message, in which case they don't compromise and just let the most conservative elements control the outcome? And we're seeing that in these two governors' races."
