Thursday, 24 November 2011 08:29 AM EST

CAIRO, Nov 24 (Reuters) - The Egyptian authorities on Thursday released three U.S. students held in Cairo on suspicion of taking part in violence during a protest against the country's ruling military council, a security source said.

The three, students at the American University in Cairo, were paraded on Tuesday on Egyptian television. It cited an Interior Ministry official saying they had been detained after throwing petrol bombs at police protecting the Interior Ministry building. The university had previously named them as Gregory Porter, Luke Gates and Derrik Sweeney. (Writing by Tom Perry)
