Trump: GOP Must Pursue SAVE America Act 'With Passion'

By    |   Thursday, 05 March 2026 11:51 AM EST

President Donald Trump, in a pair of social media posts on Thursday, urged congressional Republicans to prioritize passage of the SAVE America Act, describing the voting legislation as a defining issue for the country.

Republicans should pursue the bill "with PASSION, and at the expense of everything else," Trump said in his first Truth Social post, calling for them to pass a full version of the measure rather than a "watered down version," calling it a "Country Defining fight for the Soul of our Nation."

In a second post, Trump outlined the goals for the legislation, including requiring voter identification and proof of citizenship to vote, restricting mail-in ballots to limited circumstances such as illness, disability, military service, or travel, banning transgender participation in women's sports, and prohibiting transgender surgeries for minors without parental approval.

The SAVE America Act concentrates on the voting legislation, but does not include the transgender issues mentioned by Trump, instead focusing primarily on voter eligibility in federal elections.

The bill requires individuals to provide documentary proof of U.S. citizenship when registering to vote in federal elections.

Specifically, the legislation would prohibit states from accepting or processing a voter registration application for a federal election unless the applicant presents documentary proof of U.S. citizenship.

Acceptable documentation includes identification that complies with the REAL ID Act of 2005, indicating U.S. citizenship.

The bill also bars states from registering an individual to vote in a federal election unless documentary proof of citizenship is provided at the time of registration.

States would also be required to establish an alternative process allowing applicants to submit other evidence demonstrating U.S. citizenship.

In addition, states must take affirmative steps on an ongoing basis to ensure that only U.S. citizens are registered to vote.

That requirement includes establishing programs to identify individuals who are not U.S. citizens using information supplied by certain sources.

States would also be required to remove noncitizens from their official lists of eligible voters.

The bill further creates a private right of action against election officials who register applicants to vote in federal elections without documentary proof of citizenship and establishes criminal penalties for certain offenses, including registering an applicant who fails to present such proof.

Trump's posts, in full:

"The Republicans MUST DO, with PASSION, and at the expense of everything else, THE SAVE AMERICA ACT - And not the watered down version. This is a Country Defining fight for the Soul of our Nation!"

"THE SAVE AMERICA ACT!

ALL VOTERS MUST SHOW VOTER I.D. (IDENTIFICATION!).

ALL VOTERS MUST SHOW PROOF OF CITIZENSHIP IN ORDER TO VOTE.

NO MAIL-IN BALLOTS (EXCEPT FOR ILLNESS, DISABILITY, MILITARY, OR TRAVEL!).

NO MEN IN WOMEN’S SPORTS.

NO TRANSGENDER MUTILATION SURGERY FOR CHILDREN, WITHOUT THE EXPRESS WRITTEN APPROVAL OF THE PARENTS."
