House Democrats are seeking a 3.1% pay increase for federal workers in 2020, a move similar to one President Donald Trump had blocked in the past, and one that would add $1.4 billion to the U.S. budget, according to The Hill.
"The bill provides increased funding so consumers can receive safe, quality products, small businesses can access the training and resources needed to succeed, and disadvantaged communities can achieve economic growth," House Appropriations Committee Chairwoman Nita Lowey, D-N.Y., told The Hill.
"Additionally, the bill provides a significant increase in funding to improve election security and integrity, because our democracy belongs in the hands of American voters – not in the clutches of foreign powers."
President Trump rejected a 2.1% federal pay raise with an executive order that froze federal pay, but he compromised to a 1.9% raise in the government spending bill passed by Congress, according to the report.
The 2020 proposed raise is expected to advance in a draft appropriations bill through a subcommittee Monday and proceed to the House floor later in June, per The Hill.
Among the other items attached to the bill proposed, according to the report:
- More money for IRS for tax enforcement.
- Funding for offices investigating financial crimes and terrorism funding.
- Election security grants.
- Removing riders that blocked D.C. funds used for abortion, legalizing marijuana, and needle exchange programs.
