Former Florida Rep. Debbie Mucarsel-Powell, a Democrat, has announced she is running for Senate in an attempt to unseat Sen. Rick Scott, R-Fla.
"We made history together when I became the first South American immigrant ever elected to Congress," said Mucarsel-Powell, who was born in Ecuador. "I've already fought guys like Rick Scott and beat them."
She made her comments in a campaign video released Tuesday.
Democrats are hopeful that putting up a strong candidate will focus attention on the race, Roll Call said. However, the media outlet noted Mucarsel-Powell faces an uphill climb in her bid to challenge Scott.
The Florida Politics website noted she defeated then-Republican U.S. Rep. Carlos Curbelo in 2018. But she lost to Miami-Dade Mayor and now-U.S. Rep. Carlos Giménez, a Republican, a couple of years later.
