"Sex and the City" actress Cynthia Nixon is considering a primary challenge to New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo next year, associates of the star tell The Wall Street Journal.

Nixon is being pushed by liberal groups to enter the race against the incumbent Democrat. In the past, Nixon has dismissed talk about running, but associates tell the Journal she is now giving it some thought.

Nixon sparked controversy in 2012 when she announced: "I’ve been straight and I’ve been gay, and gay is better," The New York Times reported.

Now, she is being praised in some circles as a candidate who could make a strong showing.

"She’s an out-of-the-box candidate with progressive credentials who would excite people," said Billy Easton, director of the Alliance for Quality Education, a public-education advocacy group.

Zephyr Teachout, an associate law professor, who collected 34 percent of the vote against Cuomo in 2014, noted Cuomo could be vulnerable.

"In the last few years, there’s been an earthquake in American politics, and Andrew Cuomo could well be surprised," Teachout said.
