Sen. Cory Booker, D-N.J., is introducing legislation to legalize marijuana at the federal level, The Hill is reporting.

Booker's bill would decriminalize marijuana at the federal level, while encouraging states to legalize pot, according to the website.

"Our country's drug laws are badly broken and need to be fixed," Booker said. "They don't make our communities any safer — instead they divert critical resources from fighting violent crimes, tear families apart, unfairly impact low-income communities and communities of color and waste billions in taxpayer dollars each year."

Booker is set to discuss the legislation on his Facebook page on Tuesday afternoon, The Record newspaper in New Jersey reported.

Under his proposed legislation, the bill would allow people who are serving time for marijuana-related offense to be re-sentenced, the newspaper said.

But Booker's legislation is not expected to get far, The Hill noted. A similar bill introduced by Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., never got beyond in the Judiciary Committee in 2015.

Meanwhile, the administration has signaled plans to get tough on marijuana enforcement.
