Michael Cohen, President Donald Trump's former personal lawyer, has agreed to a plea deal, ABC News and other news outlets reported Tuesday.
Cohen was schduled to appear in a Manhattan federal courtroom at 4 p.m. Tuesday, a spokesman for the federal prosecutor in Manhattan said in an email.
CNN reported shortly before 3 p.m. that the lawyer had surrendered to the FBI.
Under such a deal, Cohen would plead guilty in federal court in Manhattan to charges related to bank and tax fraud as well as a campaign finance violation, and agree to cooperate with the government.
Cohen was seen earlier Tuesday leaving his apartment and traveling to the midtown Manhattan officers of one of his attorneys, former federal prosecutor Guy Patrillo. At the courthouse, security officers had set up barricades outside the main entrance.
Tuesday's developments came a day after another report that prosecutors were preparing criminal charges against Cohen, who was long associated with Trump as a fixer, for tax and banking fraud related to his taxi business.
The New York Times reported over the weekend that Cohen was under investigation for more than $20 million in fraud.
Further, prosecutors are also looking into whether the payments Cohen made to porn actress Stormy Daniels and former Playboy model Karen McDougal to silence their claims about Trump violated campaign finance law.
Cohen has been under investigation since FBI agents raided his home and office in April and seized electronics and documents.
