Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, asked his colleagues in Congress to pray that President Donald Trump has the “wisdom” to sign the border security bill headed for his desk.

“Let’s pray that the president will have wisdom to sign the bill so government doesn’t shut down,” said Grassley, who as president pro tempore of the Senate is the second-highest ranking official in the chamber, according to C-SPAN.

The senator then led his colleagues in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance.

Guest chaplain Revered Eddie Edmonds had led a prayer in the Senate earlier, and called for “strength to make wise decisions and the courage to stand up in the face of adversity, doing the right thing, first time and every time.”

Trump has criticized the legislation, which does not include the funding he requested for additional barriers on the Southwest border, but has not said whether he would or wouldn’t sign it.

Grassley’s comments echo Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., who said on the floor Thursday morning: "I hope each of my colleagues will join me in moving forward with the agreement produced by this hard work and the president will sign it into law.”
