Sen. Coons: Attacks on Saudi Oil Could Spark Military Action

By    |   Monday, 16 September 2019 12:10 PM

Iran is pushing the resolve of the United States, and if intelligence proves it is behind the weekend drone attacks on Saudi Arabia's oil fields, "we need to take seriously taking action against them," Sen. Chris Coons said Monday.

"Iran is one of the most dangerous state sponsors of terrorism," the Delaware Democrat told Fox News' "Fox and Friends." "This may well be the thing that calls for military action against Iran if that's what the intelligence supports."

The United States depends on its alliances around the world, and even though its relationship with Saudi Arabia has been strained by the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi and the actions of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammad Bin Salman Al Saud, Iran is "really pushing our resolve," said Coons.

"It is really testing to see whether we are actually going to stand up," said Coons. "If there are attacks by Iran on our close allies like Jordan, Israel or the Saudis, we need to take seriously taking action against them."

Iran has denied being behind the attacks on State energy producer Saudi Aramco, which lost about 5.7 million barrels a day of output on Saturday when 10 unmanned aerial vehicles hit the crude-processing facility in Abqaiq and the Saudi kingdom's second-largest oil field in Khurais.

"First, I want to see the intelligence but it seems credible that the Houthis don't have the sort of advanced drones that carried out this crippling strike on the Saudi oil facilities," Coons said. "My hope that the president will consult with his generals, his diplomats, his advisors and will look hard at the intelligence."
