Alt-right demonstrators and protestors clashed in Berkeley, California, on Sunday, resulting in the arrests of 20 people, according to the Mercury News.
The alt-right group, some wearing Army fatigues and combat boots, had gathered for the “No To Marxism in Berkeley” demonstration when they were confronted by counter-protestors who outnumbered them. Both groups screamed in each other’s faces, and some pushed and shoved each other. The 20 arrested were mostly taken in for possession of banned weapons in parks, on streets and sidewalks.
“Even though there were many hundreds of people, many of whom came armed and hostile, there were no significant injuries to anyone in the public or to City staff,” Berkeley Police said in a statement.
“The lack of injuries is fortunate given that extremists threw explosives at Berkeley Police and Alameda County Sheriff’s Office mutual aid officers. Berkeley Fire treated and released three members of the public for minor injuries,” the statement continued.
Police also said extremists smashed 21 city vehicles, slashed vehicle tires and set one city vehicle on fire.
