Al Jazeera Attracts Just 13,000 Visitors a Day

The number of viewers tuning into Al Jazeera America is on par with public access programing, drawing an average audience of 13,000 a day despite its availability to millions of American cable subscribers.

That's according to the New York Post, which notes the U.S. ratings of the Middle Eastern-based news agency are so low, Nielsen doesn't consider it important enough to report.

Al Jazeera America purchased the channel space from Al Gore after the former vice president's Current TV project failed. Al Jazeera pulls in just half the ratings of Gore's venture, although it is available to 44 million American households.

Its viewership is better, but not much better, than public access programming, which attracts about 5,000 viewers a day in the key 25-54-year-old demographic.

A spokesman for the network said, despite the poor viewership, it will continue to make large financial investments in programming and marketing.

The network's reputation for harboring an anti-United States bias is blamed for the rocky launch in August, and its failure to attract a wide American audience. The network’s financial backer, the government of Qatar, paid a hefty $500 million in January to buy Current TV from Gore and gain US distribution.
