Although Norwegian Prime Minister Erna Solberg leads her country’s Conservative Party and is probably more politically simpatico to Donald Trump than most European leaders, she is—like virtually all heads of government in Western Europe—lock-step in the belief climate change is real and must be combated.
Solberg made this very clear at the White House Wednesday afternoon. In her opening remarks at a joint news conference with the President, the prime minister brought up the subject of climate change—which Trump once deemed a “hoax” crafted by the Chinese—and stated her support for the Paris agreement on the issue from which Trump has withdrawn the U.S.
“Norway is combating climate change — it’s an important issue for us and we are committed to the Paris agreement,” Solberg told reporters in the East Room of the White House.
For his part, Trump seemed to take steps back from his statement withdrawing the U.S. from the Paris agreement last summer and hinted that the U.S. might actually rejoin the agreement.
"Frankly, it's an agreement I had no problem with, but I had a problem with the agreement that was signed because as usual, [the Obama administration] made a bad deal," he said.
