Trump Legal Team Will Come Out Swinging on Tuesday

Donald Trump’s defense attorneys on Tuesday will hit hard at the articles of impeachment—attacking what they consider the lack of constitutional foundation for the case against the president, and the lack of any wrongdoing contained in either article of impeachment passed by the House.

“This is a dangerous attack on the people’s right to choose their leaders,” a source close to the Trump legal team told Newsmax on Saturday.

Along those lines, the same source said, Trump’s attorneys will underscore the point that the impeachment is designed to “overturn the 2016 election” and have an impact on the 2020 election.

The source, who spoke on background, said that Trump’s White House Counsel Pat Cipollone will deliver the opening argument and the President’s personal attorney Jay Sekulow will follow.

“Both will underscore the point that neither article of impeachment alleges any violation of the law,” said the source, who added that the Trump team will make the point that pursuit of the president’s removal will do “lasting damage” to the constitutional form of government.

Trumps outside attorneys, Prof. Alan Dershowitz and former U.S. Solicitor General Ken Starr, will cover other unspecified areas in his defense, the source said.

The same source said that the Trump legal team dismisses the recent report of the Government Accounting Office that the president broke the law by delaying U.S. aid to Ukraine. In the source's words, “The GAO is inserting itself in something with which it has nothing to do. They’ve done it in the past. This is nothing new.”
