Despite final polls showing Democratic Sen. Jon Tester leading Republican Matt Rosendale, Republicans in Montana who spoke to Newsmax still voiced confidence they could make Rosendale only the fourth Republican U.S. Senator in their state’s history.
A Harris Interactive poll completed November 4 showed two-termer Tester leading State Auditor Rosendale by 49 to 43 percent. Five days before, a Gravis Poll gave Tester the lead over Rosendale by 48 to 45 percent.
“Vice President Pence is now at a local airport with [Republican Sens.] Lindsay Graham [S.C.] and Cory Gardiner [Colo.],” former Secretary of State Bob Brown told Newsmax on Monday afternoon,
“Don Trump, Jr. and Kimberly Guilfoyle were in Montana stumping for Matt for days last week. And of course the President himself has been here four times.”
Brown, the 2004 GOP candidate for governor, said “the likely reason for all of the focus here is that national Republicans feel Matt can win.”
Last week, Rosendale got a boost when Libertarian nominee Ron Breckinridge announced he was abandoning the race and urged his supporters to back the Republican nominee. The Libertarian specifically cited an anonymous campaign mailer urging a vote for him because Rosendale would bring more government surveillance to Montana. Tester’s campaign has branded a “lie” the charge it was behind the mailer.
