Dem. Sen. Campaign Head: Don't Take Massachusetts for Granted

Despite its history as a solidly Democratic state, Massachusetts is in no way taken for granted when it comes to its special election for U.S. senator on June 25, Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee Chairman Michael Bennet of Colorado told reporters.

Although Bennet was at a press breakfast hosted by The Christian Science Monitor on Wednesday primarily to discuss his role as one of the Senate's Gang of Eight on immigration, he was also questioned in his role as DSCC head about the race for the seat vacated by Secretary of State John Kerry.

One reporter cited recent polls showing Democratic nominee Rep. Ed Markey locked in a tight race with Republican Gabriel Gomez and asked, "Why is the race so close?"

"I feel very confident we'll hold" the Massachusetts seat, said Bennet. "But based on recent history, we're not going to take any chances" -- an obvious reference to the victory of Republican Scott Brown in the race to succeed the late Sen. Edward Kennedy in January of 2010.
