Obama's Expected New Afghan Plan Sparks Debate

Sunday, 29 November 2009 09:51 AM EST

As President Barack Obama gets ready to announce a redrawn battle plan for Afghanistan, lawmakers are weighing in on the expected large increase in U.S. forces there.

Obama plans a Tuesday night speech from West Point, N.Y., and the military is preparing for an increase of up to 35,000 troops.

One supporter is Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, who's on the Armed Services Committee.

He says U.S. national security future depends on "getting it right in Afghanistan." Graham says Obama is right in his assessment that the war in Afghanistan must be won.

But Sen. Bernie Sanders wants more countries to help out in Afghanistan. The Vermont independent also worries about the rising war costs.

The senators appeared on ABC's "This Week."
