McCain: Afghan Withdrawal Date Ill-Advised

Thursday, 24 June 2010 07:30 AM EDT

Sen. John McCain says he still thinks it's a mistake to announce a July 2011 date for start of a U.S. troop withdrawal from Afghanistan.

McCain tells ABC's "Good Morning America" he has full confidence in Gen. David Petraeus, whom President Barack Obama chose to succeed the ousted Gen. Stanley McChrystal as the Afghan commander. But he also says he thinks more U.S. forces are needed there.

On strategy, McCain says, "We cannot succeed with a date certain" for the commencement of a pull-out. The Arizona Republican, a Vietnam era prisoner of war, said: "You cannot tell the enemy when you're leaving, when you're in warfare, and expect your strategy to prevail."
