With President Barack Obama shifting many of his stances to the center and possessing formidable campaign skills, toppling him in next year’s election will be different. Meanwhile, there is no clear Democratic heavyweight for 2016.
“It’s tough fighting an incumbent president,” Republican strategist Tyler Harber tells The Hill. “The people who make significant runs for office wait for when it’s an open seat.”
Among those who have ruled themselves out for 2012 are South Dakota Sen. John Thune, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, Indiana Rep. Mike Pence, Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan and Florida Sen.
Marco Rubio.
