Former Republican presidential candidate John McCain never was the best choice for office in 2008, Rick Santorum, a GOP contender in 2012, said on “Fox News Sunday.”
Politico.com reported that Santorum said “anybody but McCain” was the optimum strategy for Republicans to win the White House.
“Nothing about John McCain personally, but I just didn’t feel that he was going to be our best candidate in the fall,” Santorum said. “It turned out to be that way.”
The former senator from Pennsylvania ended up endorsing Mitt Romney that election year.
“I endorsed him right after the Florida primary, when it looked like it was going to be a choice between Gov. Romney and John McCain,” he said. “And in that race, I really felt anybody but McCain was the best solution.”
Six days after Santorum’s endorsement, the former Massachusetts governor dropped out of the race.
Romney is a contender in 2012.
