Nixon Library Battling over Watergate Exhibit

A scandal more than 35 years old is giving the Richard Nixon Presidential Library and Museum new problems.

A battle over how to depict the Watergate scandal in an exhibit at the museum has Nixon loyalists pitted against officials from the National Archives, which controls the museum in Yorba Linda, Calif.

According to The New York Times, an interactive exhibit on Watergate was supposed to open on July 1. But objections by Nixon loyalists have forced the National Archives to postpone the debut and review the exhibit.

“Taping and wiretapping go back as far as F.D.R.,” Bob Bostock of the Nixon Foundation told the Times. “It lacks the context it needs: that Nixon was not the first president to do some of these things and that some of these things had been going on with many of his predecessors, in some cases, much more than he did.”

The Watergate scandal led to Nixon's resignation in August 1974.
