Pence Latest Republican Heading to Iowa

By    |   Tuesday, 30 June 2009 12:18 PM EDT

Indiana Congressman Mike Pence is the latest Republican to schedule a visit to Iowa with an eye toward seeking the 2012 GOP presidential nomination.

Pence, who was first elected to the House in 2000, is due to make an appearance in Cedar Rapids on July 24, Politico reports.

Pence is chairman of the House Republican Conference, the third highest GOP leadership position. He describes himself as "a Christian, a conservative and a Republican, in that order."

Nevada Sen. John Ensign visited Iowa, an early caucus state in presidential races, in early June, before he admitted to carrying on an extramarital affair with a campaign staffer.

Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour, former chairman of the Republican National Committee, also visited Iowa in June. But he has sought to downplay his 2012 ambitions, saying he would be "very surprised" if he ended up running for president.
