Religious Right: GOP Abandoning Key Races

By    |   Friday, 24 October 2008 10:42 AM EDT

The Family Research Council is attacking the National Republican Campaign Committee for “abandoning social conservative candidates” by withdrawing funds for ads in the re-election races of two congresswomen.

Family Research Council President Tony Perkins sent a letter of complaint to Rep. Tom Cole of Oklahoma, chairman of the NRCC, and said he will urge FRC supporters to stop contributing to the committee “until it starts supporting and fighting for conservative candidates in close races.”

The two Republican congresswomen are Marilyn Musgrave of Colorado and Michelle Bachmann of Minnesota.

Musgrave is one of the most outspoken members of the House in opposition to gay marriage, and is in an uphill fight to retain her seat against Democrat Betsy Markey, The Hill newspaper reported.

Bachmann came under fire last week for saying that Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama and other members of Congress hold “anti-American views.” Since then her Democratic opponent Elwyn Tinklenberg has received a flood of campaign contributions and has risen in the polls, according to The Hill.

Perkins called the two congressional races “winnable.”

“The left is attacking both of these outstanding women because they are true conservatives. They vote pro-life and pro-family,” he said.

“Pulling funds from their campaigns sends the wrong message to their supporters…

“This is no time to cut and run from a fight.”
