Republicans gained support from independent voters in droves last week, and that trend played a huge role in the GOP’s victory. “This wave was driven by independents voting for Republicans,” GOP pollster Whit Ayres, tells
Politico.

Democratic pollster Stan Greenberg agrees. “This was an angry, protest election where people voted against the Democrats and the Obama agenda,” he tells the news service.
A new poll conducted by Ayres and Greenberg shows that 79 percent of independents think the country is headed in the wrong direction, while just 14 percent believe it’s on the right track.
Only 35 percent of independents approve of President Barack Obama’s job performance, while 60 percent disapprove. And 43 percent of independents who supported a Republican congressional candidate said they did so to limit Obama and the Democrats.
