House Democrats Contemplate Life without Pelosi

By    |   Monday, 13 September 2010 10:36 AM EDT

Bowing to political reality, House Democrats are starting to consider the implications of losing control of their chamber in November’s elections, Politico reports. The first casualty, of course, would be House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, according to a report by politico.com.

Pelosi, House, Democrats, HoyerMany Democrats say the entire Democratic leadership would be revamped. But the party doesn’t have a large ready pool of replacements, after current Majority Leader Steny Hoyer would presumably take over as minority leader.

“If we lose it badly, Pelosi would have to leave, as might the whole leadership team,” a veteran House Democrat, told Politico.

“I can see Hoyer becoming minority leader. And I can imagine that Jim Clyburn, D-S.C., would stay as whip, but then retire. They could become transitional leaders as we look for new leadership. It would have to sort itself out.”
