Oliver Stone Planning Chavez Documentary

Thursday, 11 December 2008 09:38 AM EST

Controversial film-maker Oliver Stone is planning to follow up his biopic of President George W. Bush with a documentary about Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, it was reported Thursday.

Stone, whose Bush movie "W" was released in the US in October, told Daily Variety that his new film would focus on Chavez and the rise of leftist politicians in South America in recent years.

"It's about Chavez and the South American revolution," Stone was quoted as saying by the entertainment industry journal.

Stone has already with met with Chavez, who is reviled by the outgoing Bush administration.

The report said Stone's film would examine the opposition Chavez has faced at home and abroad during his time in office.

Stone's film follows a previous documentary about another Washington bete noire, Cuba's former president Fidel Castro.

However Variety said Stone had denied reports he was planning a movie about Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

Stone has already made several feature films focusing on historical figures, including "Nixon" and "JFK."

The veteran director has won three Oscars - best screenplay for "Midnight Express" in 1979, and best director in 1987 and 1990 for "Platoon" and "Born on the Fourth of July" respectively.
