Commentator Robert Novak will retire due to the severity of the brain tumor with which he has been diagnosed, reports Lynn Sweet of the Chicago Sun-Times.
Immediately after his diagnosis, Novak had written in a statement: “I will be suspending my journalistic work for an indefinite but, God willing, not too lengthy period."
Today, Novak said of his treatment, "The details are being worked out with the doctors this week, but the tentative plan is for radiation and chemotherapy."
The Evans-Novak column was first distributed by Publishers Newspaper Syndicate in its flagship paper the New York Herald-Tribune, which went under in 1966. The Sun-Times then became their home paper.
Novak said he and co-author Rowland Evans wanted to break at least one bit of news in their political report each time it was published, and it became one of the most widely-read political columns in the country.
Novak is also known for co-hosting CNN's "Crossfire" from 1980 to 2005.
