A nuclear-armed Iran would be a threat to the world that cannot be allowed, says Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
And while a change of regime in today's extremist mullah-led Iranian government would be welcome, the main thrust against that regime must be to prevent Iran from going nuclear.
Speaking Sunday on NBC's “Meet The Press,” Netanyahu warned that a nuclear-armed Iran would destabilize the Middle East and threaten the entire world by setting off an arms race and becoming a supplier to terrorists of what he called catastrophic weapons.
"The goal is to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons," Netanyahu explained. According to Netanyahu, most governments in the Middle East, Europe and elsewhere agree with him. "We all don't want to see this regime acquiring nuclear weapons. … It's not merely an interest of Israel," he said.
He added that President Barack Obama is as committed as former President George W. Bush to preventing Iran from becoming a nuclear power.
"It's my view that there's an American commitment to make sure that doesn't happen," he said.
When asked whether Israel would once again launch a unilateral attack against Iranian nuclear facilities, Netanyahu said Israel "always reserves the right to defend itself."
