Issa Focuses on Sweetheart Mortgages for Congressmen

By    |   Thursday, 17 February 2011 03:07 PM EST

House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman Darrell Issa has issued his first subpoena, and some of his congressional colleagues won’t be too happy about it. That’s because Issa will be looking at Countrywide Financial’s VIP program, which may have offered especially attractive mortgages for members of Congress, Politico reports.

Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif.
He has asked for names, addresses, and e-mail exchanges of all those involved, which goes far beyond the investigation started in the last Congress.

Issa mainly seeks information about borrowers who were government officials. Americans “have a right to know the totality of who participated in the Countrywide VIP program and what they did in return for access to it,” he said in a statement. Congress’s job is to “get all of the facts so that the American people can judge for themselves who should be held responsible and accountable.”
