House GOP Dumps Intelligence Panel

Thursday, 23 December 2010 10:09 AM EST

The new Republican majority in the House is working hard to increase the body’s efficiency and trim its operating costs. And so the GOP transition team has decided to drop the Appropriations Select Intelligence Oversight Panel, created by Speaker Nancy Pelosi in 2007, Politico reports.

house, dumps, special, appropriations, committeeDemocrats established the panel as part of their implementation of the 9/11 commission recommendations. The panel is a select subcommittee of the Appropriations Committee and includes members from the Appropriations and Select Intelligence Committees.

"From the beginning, this panel put a premium on bureaucracy at the expense of our national security. Republicans have pledged to make effective oversight a priority, and that is exactly what the Intelligence Committee and all our committees will do,” says Brendan Buck, spokesman for the House GOP’s transition task force.

The decision to jettison the panel will be included in the Republican rules package, which the House will probably approve routinely when the new Congress convenes Jan. 5.
