Gallup Poll: 60 Percent Want Budget Compromise

By    |   Thursday, 24 February 2011 01:56 PM EST

It should come as no surprise that most Americans want to see the two parties compromise on a budget so that the government doesn’t shut down March 4. And that’s exactly what a USA Today/Gallup poll shows.

The survey found that 60 percent of respondents want Democrats and Republicans to agree on a compromise budget plan, even if it’s one that respondents oppose.

Only 32 percent of Americans want Congress to hold out for a budget that respondents want if that means a government shutdown.

“In the high-stakes political maneuvering taking place before March 4, public opinion largely supports Republicans' insistence on a plan that makes significant cuts in government spending, and this could put pressure on Democrats to meet them more than halfway,” writes Gallup’s Lydia Saad.

“At the same time, it may strengthen Democrats' power to bargain for fewer cuts as part of a compromise plan to avoid a government shutdown.”
