Legendary CBS anchorman Walter Cronkite is gravely ill, according to a published report.
Mediabistro's blog, TVNewser, disclosed: "TVNewser has learned legendary CBS newsman Walter Cronkite, 92, who once held the title of 'Most Trusted Man in America,' is gravely ill, according to multiple CBS News sources. The network began updating his obituary more than a week ago."
CBS News executive Linda Mason, designated to speak on Cronkite's behalf, had no comment.
Cronkite was named anchor of "CBS Evening News" in 1962, and held that post for 19 years until he was replaced by Dan Rather. Cronkite remained a special correspondent for CBS after leaving the anchor's chair.
"Twenty-four hours after I told CBS News that I was stepping down at my 65th birthday I was already regretting it and I've regretted it every day since," he said in 2006. "It's too good a job for me to have given it up the way that I did."
