GOP Senate leaders are sponsoring a reception Wednesday evening to help offset Norm Coleman’s mounting legal fees for his challenge to Al Franken in Minnesota’s senate race, according to The Hill.
On hand to draw well-heeled patrons are Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., Minority Whip Jon Kyl, R-Ariz., and Sens. Lamar Alexander, R-Tenn., John Ensign, R-Nev., John Cornyn, R-Texas, John Thune, R-S.D., and Richard Burr, R-N.C., says the Hill report.
Meanwhile, Franken, who may be ahead by as much as 250 votes, starts a round of meetings with Senate policy experts charged with briefing the would-be freshman senator on pending legislation — in preparation for his still undetermined swearing-in ceremony.
Although ahead in the vote count, Franken needs a certificate of election – as required by Minnesota state law. That law calls for a delay in the award of such certification as long as a legal challenge continues. That challenge before a panel of judges is now in its twelfth week — with yet no end in sight.
According to the Hill, political action committees are being solicited to give $5,000 to host the event or $1,000 to attend.
Meanwhile, individuals can get in the door for $500. To be listed as a sponsor is more expensive.
Overall, however, individuals can give a total of $2,300 to Coleman’s recount committee, whether attendee or sponsor.
