Obama to Meet With Bloomberg, Schwarzenegger on Immigration

Tuesday, 19 April 2011 03:56 PM EDT

President Barack Obama plans to meet today with New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, former California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and other business, political, religious and law enforcement officials to talk about ways to improve U.S. immigration laws.

The 3:25 p.m. meeting is closed to reporters. The guest list includes Bloomberg, Schwarzenegger, San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro and Philadelphia Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey.

Other attendees will include former Florida Republican Senator Mel Martinez, who now works at JPMorgan Chase & Co., Cargill Inc. Chief Executive Officer Greg Page, Facebook Inc. Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg and Richard Trumka, president of the AFL-CIO, according to a White House statement.

Obama was a supporter of an overhaul of U.S. immigration laws when he was a U.S. senator and has continued to push for new legislation as president.

The president backs an approach that includes new efforts to secure the nation’s border, hold businesses accountable for employing illegal workers and the creation a way for immigrants in the country illegally to gain legal status while also allowing new workers to come to the U.S., according to the statement.
