Biden: Life Begins at Conception

By    |   Friday, 05 September 2008 03:09 PM EDT

Democratic vice presidential candidate Joe Biden has departed from the party line and said that as a Catholic, he believes life begins at conception.

In an interview on “Meet the Press” on Sunday, the Senator from Delaware said of abortion-rights advocates in his party: “They believe in their faith and they believe in human life, and they have differing views as to when life — I’m prepared as a matter of faith to accept that life begins at the moment of conception.”

Biden’s statement comes in sharp contrast to a recent comment by his presidential running mate Barack Obama. In an interview with the Rev. Rick Warren last month, Obama dodged a question about when life begins, saying determining that was “above my pay grade.”

Obama on Sunday told ABC News that remark was “too flip,” adding: “All I meant to communicate was that I don’t presume to be able to answer these kinds of theological questions.”

The two candidates’ comments on abortion came after the Republicans nominated Sarah Palin as their vice presidential nominee. The New York Times observed that Palin’s “anti-abortion stance and decision to give birth just five months ago to a baby with Down syndrome have revved up the conservative base of her party.”
