Can Baking Soda Help Heartburn?

Baking soda can do more than simply take odors out of the fridge. It can also be a helpful heartburn cure.

Heartburn is the painful feeling caused when stomach acid backs up into the esophagus.

According to the Mayo Clinic, the burning sensation associated with heartburn often happens after eating, and the feeling can worsen when someone is bending over or lying down.

Heartburn, often, is associated with eating certain foods. Highly acidic foods like those that are spicy, made with tomatoes, or citrus products can be culprits. Alcohol and fatty or fried foods can also cause heartburn.

Baking soda, which is chemically known as sodium bicarbonate, can be used to reduce stomach acid and potentially reduce heartburn. WebMD explains the antacid effect of baking soda should only be considered a temporary solution to the problem. If heartburn persists, it is wise to see a doctor.

Church & Dwight Co., Inc., the makers of Arm&Hammer brand baking soda, suggest
a mixing a solution of a half-teaspoon of baking soda to four ounces of water taken every two hours as an antacid. Amounts should be limited to no more than seven half-teaspoons of baking soda every 24 hours, and it should not be given to children younger than 5.

The manufacturer also warns that the high sodium content of baking soda should be considered before it is ingested.

WebMD also warns baking soda can have an adverse effect on medications that require stomach acid to work. Among the drugs included are ampicillin, atazanavir, certain azole antifungals, iron supplements, pazopanib, and sucralfate.

Even though baking soda is a common household product, its potential interaction with drugs and effect on other health conditions should be discussed with a doctor prior to use.
