What is dandruff?
Dandruff, or Pityriaris Simplex Capillitii, is characterized by shredded bits of dead skin that are shed from the scalp. Dandruff formation in small amounts is almost as natural as dead skin falling off from other parts of the body. But, in some individuals, the shedding becomes amplified for several reasons.
Some identified reasons for dandruff formation are overactive oil secretions by sebaceous glands in the skin, exposure to harsh temperatures, and effect of certain microorganisms on the scalp. Sometimes, poor nutrition and food allergies can also cause dandruff, especially a zinc deficiency or a lack of Omega-3 fatty acids in your diet.
How do I get rid of dandruff?
Shampoos for dandruff control
There are specialized shampoos on the market that treat dandruff. These shampoos use a wide combination of ingredients for dandruff control. The chief ingredient is salicylic acid. Salicylic acid removes dead skin from the scalp and reduces the formation of dead tissues. Another ingredient, zinc pyrithone, aids in dandruff treatment by acting on microorganisms through its antifungal properties. Selenium sulfide has the combined effect of both salicylic acid and zinc pyrithone. These shampoos also contain sodium bicarbonate (better known as baking soda) that has a cooling and soothing effect on the scalp. This is an important ingredient for dandruff treatment.
Home remedies for dandruff
There are several natural methods that treat dandruff. For instance, a combination of yogurt and vinegar is very effective for dandruff control and treatment. This concoction should be applied for 10 to 15 minutes daily for promising results. Essential oils of cedarwood and juniper also work well when rubbed on the scalp and left for one hour. Use mild soap and water to rinse it out. Coconut oil is another excellent dandruff solution and can be massaged daily on the scalp. Follow with a hot towel treatment for effective results. This dandruff treatment is used by many individuals and has gained popularity.
Lemon juice is perhaps the best-known natural dandruff treatment. To get rid of dandruff naturally, lemon juice is applied before a shower and then rinsed off.
