Apple cider vinegar has a number of potential health benefits. It may be a natural way to keep dandruff at bay.
According to Mayo Clinic doctors, there are many causes of dandruff. The flakes associated with dandruff are actually excess skin cells that have built up on the scalp.
One potential cause of this problem is a “yeast-like fungus” called Malassezia. This fungus lives on the heads of many people, but can irritate some. It causes extra skin cell growth that can flake off in what most people call dandruff.

Apple cider vinegar has scientifically proven antifungal properties.
A 2015 study published in the Journal of Prosthodontics showed that apple cider vinegar had potential in fighting the fungal growth that contributed to discomfort for denture wearers. These same antifungal properties are what proponents of apple cider vinegar as a hair and scalp rinse point to for fighting dandruff.
Prevention recommends using a rinse that is half apple cider vinegar and half water. The magazine also suggests putting a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar into regular shampoo. Either method will give your scale the benefit of the pH balancing acidic properties of vinegar as well.
Home Remedies for Life adds that vinegar can make the scalp less itchy and improve blood circulation. Home Remedies for Life recommends mixing a banana with two cups of vinegar into a paste to spread on the scalp every day for a week to get rid of dandruff.
Other methods include mixing crushed aspirin into a cup of vinegar and applying it to the hair immediately after shampooing. Mixing vinegar with beet root juice, lemon juice, chamomile tea, tea tree oil, and water are also purported to be ways to cure dandruff with vinegar.
