Is Silver Safe and Effective for Infections?

Tuesday, 06 April 2010 10:59 AM EDT

Question: Is silver effective for infections? Is there a chance of toxicity? I have heard that it is used in hospital water supplies due to infections.

Dr. Blaylock's Answer:

I am not a big proponent of using silver compounds orally. Few studies have been done on safety, and it is one of the metals that will accumulate in the brain.

High doses can result in permanent blue staining of the skin. Because many metals have harmful effects on the brain, I discourage people from using it long-term.

It is an excellent antibacterial when used on the skin. Most colloidal silver products have very low doses of silver. They may be less toxic, but until careful studies are done, I would be cautious.
