Question: Are cysts on the liver cause for concern?

Most liver cysts are harmless, and only 5 percent ever cause symptoms. Symptoms are caused by bleeding into the cyst, which, in most cases, is of no real danger. The bleeding stops on its own, and the pain gradually subsides.

Many people have liver cysts — usually as a single cyst, but occasionally multiple. Surgery is rarely indicated.

In rare instances, the cyst is associated with a tumor, either benign or malignant. This can usually be determined with an MRI scan of the liver.

Taking an assortment of antioxidants, such as curcumin, quercetin, ellagic acid, and EGCG can reduce the risk of liver inflammation and malignant transformation of the cyst. Most cysts do not interfere with liver function.
