Question: My son has ADHD. He’s on a gluten-free diet, and we have never had him take stimulant drugs. Do you feel drugs such as Adderall are safe?
Dr. Blaylock's Answer:
Your son is fortunate to have such loving, dedicated parents. In general, I am opposed to the use of stimulant drugs.
There are many contributing causes for ADHD (attention deficit hyperactive disorder), but central to the condition appears to be constant brain inflammation, which in many cases is due to hidden food intolerances.
I generally suggest getting a comprehensive food allergy testing by such labs as Metametrix or an Alcat test.
Removing food allergies can produce dramatic results in many cases. Probiotic supplementation is also critical.
Because neurotoxic metals play a critical role as well, I would suggest getting a hair analysis for these metals. It is also critical to remove all excitotoxic food additives and sugar from the child’s diet.
