Donald Trump's campaign manager had a sharp exchange Tuesday morning with a CNN anchor, who challenged her about his tax returns and whether or not he's being truthful about an ongoing IRS audit.
Alisyn Camerota asked Kellyanne Conway on "New Day" if Trump would make public any documentation that shows he is in fact being audited.
"I'm sorry?" Conway asked. After Camerota repeated the question, Conway shot back.
"I don't know. Why? In other words, are you calling him a liar?" Conway said.
"We're taking his word for it," Camerota said.
"Are you calling him a liar?" Conway said again. "We're taking Hillary Clinton's word that she was overheated and didn't have pneumonia. Or that she's going to be aspirational or uplifting, or she's going to start talking to the press again.
"Seriously, we're running against a Clinton and we're going to challenge someone's veracity?"
Camerota then exhaled sharply and posed her next question, asking Conway if Trump would release his tax returns after LinkedIn founder Reid Hoffman offered $5 million to veterans groups if Trump made his returns public.
"No, but I hope that that man thinks so much of the veterans that he would give them $5 million whether or not Mr. Trump defies the advice of his lawyer and his accountant and releases his taxes," Conway said.
"I just can't find where this is a burning issue to most of Americans."
New York Times executive editor Dean Baquet and Washington Post associate editor Bob Woodward said over the weekend they would both risk prison time if they had the opportunity to publish Trump's returns in their respective newspapers.
