Ben Stein said Saturday that "I want to see" Donald Trump's tax returns because they will confirm whether he can do a better job revitalizing the American economy than Hillary Clinton.

"I want to see Mr. Trump's tax returns," Stein — the economist, political commentator and actor — told Poppy Harlow on CNN. "He has claimed that he is a billionaire because of his spectacular deal-making.

"That he's going to use those skills. I don't think he is as rich as he says."

Clinton released her returns on Friday, showing that she and former President Bill Clinton earned $10.6 million last year.

The Clintons paid a federal tax rate of 34.2 percent last year, according to the documents.

Most of the couple's income, more than $6 million, came from speaking fees for appearances made largely before Hillary Clinton began her White House campaign in April 2015.

Her campaign released the data in a direct challenge to Trump to make his tax information public.

Stein, who also is a Newsmax columnist, told Harlow that voters want to know about Trump's wealth because he touts it as his core qualification for the White House.

"He bases his claim that he will be better on the economy because he has made so much money," he said "That's a nonsense claim.

"The fact that a person is incredibly good at making deals and building real estate does not have a darn thing to so with whether he knows about guiding an $18 or $19 trillion economy. He claims it does.

"I want to see if he is telling the truth.

"I don't believe a word of what he is saying about being worth $10 billion," Stein continued. "If he says that's his main claim to fame, let's see if it is a true."

He also slammed Clinton as a "business-as-usual candidate" and "the Wall Street darling" who is "100 percent in the pocket of big banks."

"She is the Wall Street/American finance/business/Capitol Hill establishment personified," Stein said.

"By the way, that doesn't make her a terrible person," he added. "Business as usual in the United States is pretty darn good business."

Stein also ripped Trump's economic plan, which is built on tariffs to boost American manufacturing.

"Tariffs are a terrible idea. Free trade is the right idea.

"As Mrs. Clinton said — bear in mind, I am not a big fan, but she was totally right," he cautioned. "The U.S. can compete with anyone.

"We don't need to have tariff walls," said Stein, who told Harlow that he was writing in South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham in November.

"We need to have free trade, cheaper trade and goods for the United States. That's always better than tariffs.

"Tariffs are always a bad idea."
