Europe has been well-known as a popular region for ski destinations, especially during the winter. There are a variety of resorts and locations that offer the best in skiing for experienced athletes and newcomers alike.

Many ski resorts are surrounded by local beauty, architecture, and history. Travelers can enjoy the sights while also participating in some of the greatest skiing opportunities in the world.

There are so many wonderful resorts to visit, but here are six top European ski destinations for winter:

1. Val Thorens — Located in the French Alps, this resort is the highest in Europe, according to European Best Destinations. It also boasts of the largest ski area in the world at its highest point. The atmosphere of the resort makes it an ideal spot for skiing.

2. La Plagne — For a family ski vacation, La Plagne is also located in the French Alps and known for its enormous ski area. It has a magnificent reputation for its more than 50 years providing people with winter sports.

3. Verbier, Switzerland — It has become a “ski town” for winter sports lovers around the world, The Telegraph reports. The ski resort is relatively new and continues to put a number of lifts into operation.

4. Innsbruck, Austria — Still remembered as the center of attention for the 1976 Winter Olympics, Innsbruck continues to attract skiers and tourists because of its historic environment. It was ranked No. 4 for the “best ski destinations” and No. 3 as the “best winter vacations in Europe” by U.S. News.

5. Portes du Soleil region — The Morzine/Avoriaz/Les Gets ski areas are located along the French-Swiss border. Visitors not only get to ski, but they can improve their skills with a number of ski and snowboard schools, according to the Independent.

6. Samoens — This small, quaint resort in southeastern France offers plenty of areas to ski for travelers who want to test their skills or find untracked slopes to enjoy.
